What is a polygenic risk score (PRS)?
A polygenic risk score is an aggregate weighted score derived from genome-wide association studies that quantifies an individual’s genetic predisposition to a particular disease. PRS values are calculated from thousands to millions of common genetic variants, each contributing a small effect. They are increasingly used in preventive medicine to stratify populations for targeted screening or early intervention.
